Family Guy and American Dad renewed

Published: May 14, 2012 by meza Filed under: News
Fox is maintaining the back half of its Animation Domination unchanged.

The network has picked up Family Guy and American Dad for more episodes, holding both Seth MacFarlane series on the air over the 2013-14 television season.

Both 20th Television-produced half-hours remain outstanding performers for the network, broadcasting back-to-back starting at 9 p.m. during Fox's Sunday Animation Domination block, which also features Family Guy spinoff The Cleveland Show, which has been renewed for a 4th season. The fate of Cleveland, which also comes from MacFarlane and 20th, beyond next year's fourth season has yet to be decided.

The Family Guy pickup arrives six months after MacFarlane informed THR that part of him wished the series to finish. "Part of me thinks that Family Guy should have already ended," he stated back then. "I think seven seasons is about the right life span for a TV series. I talk to the fans, and in a way I'm kind of secretly hoping for them to say we're done with it. There are plenty of people who say the show is kind of over the hill … but still the vast majority go pale in the face when I mention the possibility."

In the meantime, Sunday staple The Simpsons - following tense discussions with its voice cast - already has been renewed for two more seasons, while midseason entry Bob's Burgers was picked up for a 3rd season earlier this year. Freshman animated entries Allen Gregory has already been canceled, while ratings underperformer Napoleon Dynamite isn't anticipated to come back and isn't at the moment in production.

SMURFS 2 Logo, SMURFS 3 in creation

Published: May 11, 2012 by meza Filed under: News
After Sony’s The Smurfs made a great total of $563 million at the world box office a year ago, they waited a grand total of 12 days just before green lighting a follow up.  The studio has launched an official logo for the follow up, titled The Smurfs 2, but there was another amazing Smurf-related progress.  Apparently, Sony has plenty of confidence in their sequel writers Karey Kirkpatrick and Chris Poche, that they’re now offering the go-ahead on The Smurfs 3. Given that the production of The Smurfs 2 is already ongoing with much of the original cast coming back (plus a few new faces), things must be coming along quite properly.

Raja Gosnell, who helmed the first Smurfs movie, comes back as director for the follow up which also stars Sofia Vergara, Jonathan Winters, Alan Cumming, Fred Armisen, George Lopez, Anton Yelchin and John Oliver. The Smurfs 2 is scheduled for release on July 31st, 2013.

Sony and Columbia Pictures are creating a script for The Smurfs 3 with sequel scribes, Kirkpatrick and Poche.  The couple, who in the past worked together on Over the Hedge and Flakes, will draft up a new journey for the little blue creatures, themselves original creations of Belgian comic strip artist, Peyo.  Kirkpatrick has a long list of kid-friendly fare, including James and the Giant Peach, Chicken Run, Charlotte’s Web and The Spiderwick Chronicles. For the sequel at least, new cast additions include J.B. Smoove (Curb Your Enthusiasm) as the “naughty” Smurf, Hackus and Christina Ricci (Sleepy Hollow) as Vexy, an evil version of the lovely Smurfette (Katy Perry).

CLIFFORD THE BIG RED DOG Movie

Published: May 9, 2012 by meza Filed under: Movies News
Illumination Entertainment has only produced two animated movies so far, but they were both big hits at the box office.  Despicable Me started things off in 2010 (Despicable Me 2 opens the coming year), and earlier this year they won big with The Lorax.  The studio not long ago put a Cat in the Hat animated feature in creation, and now they’re including a non-Seuss feature to their creation record. Illumination and Universal will bring an adaptation of Clifford the Big Red Dog to the big screen.

Matt Lopez (The Sorcerer’s Apprentice) has been tapped to write the screenplay, and Chris Meledandri will produce for Illumination alongside Deborah Forte from Scholastic Media.  For those lacking of a childhood, Clifford follows a young girl called Emily Elizabeth and her 25-foot-tall dog.  Norman Bridwell published the first Clifford book in 1963 and the character has been a staple of childrens books ever since, extending in a television series in 2000.
